TIME TO STOCK UP ON RECHARGES 💔
Brace yourselves, because your phone bill is about to get a whole lot heavier. India’s biggest telecom operators — Jio, Airtel, and Vi — are reportedly gearing up for another major round of tariff hikes, and this time it could be as steep as 12 to 15%, according to a preview report by Centrum Institutional Research for the telecom and internet sector.
Why Is This Happening?
The pricing environment has become more favourable for telecom operators, with the market now essentially down to just 3+1 players. Industry insiders say this consolidation has given companies the confidence to push through another price hike within the next 3 to 4 months. The real driver behind this move is India’s Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) — a key profitability metric that telecom companies are desperate to boost. Airtel is reportedly targeting an ARPU of around ₹300, up from roughly ₹250, while Jio is under pressure to show stronger revenue growth ahead of its much-anticipated IPO. For Vodafone Idea, the urgency is even greater, as the company needs stronger cash flows to fund its 5G rollout and manage its massive outstanding dues.
Old Price vs New Price

Signs the Hike Is Already Beginning
This isn’t coming out of nowhere. Telecom companies have already started making quiet, incremental changes as a precursor to the bigger hike. Airtel has reportedly discontinued its popular ₹799 pack and nudged its ₹859 plan up to ₹899. Meanwhile, Jio has taken a sharper approach by slashing the validity of its ₹195 plan from 90 days down to just 30 days — a move that effectively raises the cost per day without technically changing the sticker price.
Will Cheap Plans Disappear?
There’s growing speculation that budget-friendly prepaid plans could be phased out entirely as telecom companies push users toward higher-value packs. While exact plan-by-plan pricing hasn’t been officially revealed, experts believe this won’t be a simple across-the-board price increase. Instead, companies may shift toward a usage-based pricing model, where heavier data users end up paying significantly more — a strategy aimed squarely at improving margins.
What Should You Do Right Now?
If you want to protect your wallet before the hike hits, here’s your game plan:
📌 Lock in a long-validity recharge (90-day or 365-day plans) now, while today’s prices are still active — this can help you skip the hike for months.
📌 Reassess your daily data usage. Many users are stuck paying for 2GB/day or 3GB/day plans despite barely using half of that.
📌 Check if you’re overpaying for bundled OTT subscriptions you don’t even use — switching to a standalone data-and-voice plan could save you real money.
The Bottom Line
No telecom company has officially confirmed exact new prices or a rollout date just yet — but multiple industry reports agree that a 12-15% tariff hike is coming within the next few months. This is quite literally the calm before the price storm.
