Dubai/New Delhi, October 2026
India is celebrating Captain Smit Machchhar, a flydubai commander whose composure in the cockpit helped prevent a catastrophe at 34,000 feet. The incident on flight FZ1073 has drawn tributes from heads of state, diplomats and ordinary citizens, and investigators are still working to establish what happened and why.
The Flight
Flydubai flight FZ1073 was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv when it made an emergency landing at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. More than 150 Israelis were on board. According to the Saudi Interior Ministry, the aircraft carried 174 passengers and eight crew members, and landed at Tabuk International Airport at 9:45 a.m.

What Happened in the Air
The details come from several sources, and some accounts differ. What is firmly established is that one pilot stabbed the other in flight, the aircraft descended sharply, passengers and crew subdued the assailant, and off-duty flydubai pilots stabilized and landed the jet.
The scale of the descent is described differently. One pilot-training expert said the aircraft fell from 34,000 feet to 16,600 feet in 90 seconds, crediting Captain Machchhar’s instincts and situational awareness for averting disaster. Israeli officials, by contrast, described a plunge of nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. One report said the aircraft later levelled off at about 15,000 feet before continuing toward Tabuk.
The accounts also agree on what happened in the cabin. An Israeli passenger told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the aircraft went into a spin and began descending. The passenger and a crew member then managed to enter the cockpit and overpower the pilot who had carried out the stabbing. The cockpit door reportedly worked as designed, so passengers had to force their way through it. A second pair of flydubai pilots who were aboard the flight then helped land the jet safely.
The Co-Pilot and the Open Questions
The Saudi Interior Ministry said an initial investigation, conducted together with a UAE security team, found that the co-pilot attacked the captain. The Saudi account does not detail the circumstances or motive. Some claims remain unverified. Israeli officials attributed to the attacker an Omani nationality. There was no immediate comment from Oman, and Israeli officials said the motive was still under investigation. Flydubai said the underlying reasons were unknown and warned against premature speculation. Within hours, though, Israeli ministers had already used strong language about the case. Readers should treat claims about nationality and motive as allegations until investigators confirm them. Tabuk’s airport operator confirmed that both pilots were hospitalised with injuries.
A Nation Responds
India’s reaction was swift. At the centenary celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Captain Machchhar had shown the world the highest form of courage. He said the pilot fought without fearing for his own life and prevented another 9/11-like attack. Modi also said he had spoken with the pilot’s parents and wife, and urged citizens to pray for his health.
President Droupadi Murmu said the nation was proud of the captain, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar praised his courage and presence of mind. India’s ambassador to the UAE, Deepak Mittal, met the captain’s family in Dubai. Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge saluted the captain and the crew, wishing him a speedy and complete recovery. The RSS also praised his courage.
Recognition also came from abroad. Netanyahu called him a true hero who saved 174 people. Israel’s ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, said Israel will honour him. Several foreign envoys in India, including Argentina’s ambassador, also paid tribute. Gujarat honoured him with the Gujarat Garima Award.
The Video Call
On Friday, Modi spoke with Captain Machchhar by video call and told him his courage, presence of mind and composure had saved many lives. The captain, who became emotional, said he has 17 years in aviation and 11 years as a captain, which helped him understand what was unfolding. Modi also spoke to him in Gujarati and credited the values his mother, Geeta Ben, instilled in him. The Prime Minister told him he was just a phone call away whenever needed.
Condition and Recovery
The Indian Embassy in Riyadh said Captain Machchhar was admitted to a hospital in Tabuk and was receiving the necessary medical attention. Indian missions are extending all possible assistance. No detailed medical update had been released at the time of writing.
Passengers Return Home
At 5:40 p.m. on the day of the incident, the passengers left Saudi Arabia on another flydubai aircraft, while the crew was flown back to Dubai separately. The passengers reached Ben Gurion Airport more than 10 hours later, and several described the episode as a miracle. Flight operations were reported suspended pending investigation.
Why It Matters
The episode will likely feed debate on cockpit security, crew screening and in-flight emergency protocols. For many Indians, it has also become a story of professional skill under extreme pressure. Machchhar’s long career, including 11 years as a Line Training Captain at SpiceJet, is being cited as the foundation for the calm he showed. He himself reportedly resisted the idea that he had done anything beyond his duty, and that modesty has added to his public standing.
What Comes Next
Several questions remain open: the attacker’s motive, whether anyone else was involved, and how the security systems that screen flight crews performed. Israeli authorities reportedly want to question the co-pilot, and Saudi and UAE officials are continuing their investigation. Until then, the verified facts are clear enough. A pilot was seriously wounded, he kept the aircraft from disaster, and 174 people landed alive.
