New Delhi, October 7, 2026: A building collapse in Delhi’s Shahdara district has triggered a major rescue operation after a residential structure came down in the Seemapuri area on Wednesday afternoon. The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety and structural condition of buildings in densely populated parts of the national capital. According to reports, the collapse occurred in New Seemapuri, in the Shahdara district, around 3:30 pm. Initial reports described the structure as a multi-storey residential building, with people believed to be inside when it collapsed. Emergency teams immediately rushed to the location after receiving information about the incident.

Rescue teams rush to the spot
Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and civic authorities were involved in the rescue operation. Several fire tenders were sent to the site, while heavy machinery was brought in to remove the large quantity of rubble. Local residents also joined the rescue effort before and alongside emergency personnel. Videos and eyewitness accounts from the area showed people attempting to clear debris and help those trapped inside. Emergency workers faced difficulties because of the narrow lanes surrounding the building, making access to the affected area challenging. Officials said that several people were rescued from the debris and taken to hospital for treatment. The Indian Express reported that eight injured people, including a three-year-old child, had been taken to hospital, while some people were still feared trapped as rescue operations continued.
The collapse created panic among residents of the densely populated neighbourhood. Families gathered near the site, desperately trying to locate relatives and friends who may have been inside the building. Hindustan Times reported that among those feared trapped was a 21-year-old pregnant woman, who was reportedly able to make a phone call from beneath the debris. Residents also reported that other family members and people passing through the area could have been caught in the collapse. Several injured people, including residents and tenants, were taken for medical treatment. Authorities and rescue personnel continued searching the debris carefully in an attempt to locate anyone who might still be trapped.
Cause of collapse yet to be established
The exact reason behind the building collapse has not yet been conclusively established. Any claims regarding structural weakness, construction activity or nearby demolition should be treated as preliminary until an official investigation determines the cause. According to reports, a relative of the building’s occupants alleged that demolition work was taking place at a neighbouring property and may have affected the structure. However, this remains an allegation and should not be treated as the confirmed cause of the collapse. The incident comes at a time when building safety and unauthorised construction are already under increased scrutiny in Delhi following several recent structural accidents. Authorities have intensified inspections and enforcement action against buildings suspected of violating construction regulations.
The immediate priority remains locating and rescuing anyone still trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue teams are working carefully because unstable sections of the collapsed structure could pose additional risks to personnel and nearby residents. Police and civic officials have also secured the area to prevent crowds from entering the danger zone. Heavy equipment is being used to clear debris, while rescue personnel continue searching through the collapsed portions of the building. The Shahdara building collapse once again highlights the importance of strict enforcement of building safety regulations, regular structural inspections and responsible construction practices in densely populated urban areas.
A detailed investigation will be required to determine whether any safety or construction violations contributed to the tragedy and whether accountability is necessary. As rescue operations continue, residents and families remain hopeful that those still missing will be found alive. Authorities are expected to provide further information regarding the number of casualties, the condition of those rescued and the exact circumstances surrounding the collapse as the operation progresses.
