The Central government is considering making CBFC certification mandatory for films released on OTT platforms by amending the Information Technology Rules, 2021. The proposal follows the controversy surrounding Satluj, which was streamed on ZEE5 without CBFC certification before being removed after government intervention. Officials are also examining possible action against ZEE5 for releasing the uncensored version of the film while it was still under CBFC review. If implemented, the move would bring OTT film releases under the same certification framework as theatrical releases, aiming to strengthen regulatory oversight and address concerns related to content and national security.
