Bollywood is witnessing one of its most significant industry standoffs in years, after actor Ranveer Singh was hit with an official non-cooperation directive by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) following his sudden exit from filmmaker Farhan Akhtar’s much-anticipated Don 3.
The Exit
Ranveer Singh was announced as the new face of the iconic Don franchise back in August 2023, generating significant buzz given the character’s legacy from Shah Rukh Khan’s earlier films. However, roughly three weeks before the unit was scheduled to leave for its planned January shoot, Singh abruptly withdrew from the project.

According to reports, Singh’s exit stemmed from creative dissatisfaction — he was reportedly unhappy with the absence of a bound script, unresolved storylines, and concerns over overall project management. He also did not receive an advance and was reportedly uncompensated for time lost on other shelved projects tied to the film.
The Fallout
Farhan Akhtar and his producing partner Ritesh Sidhwani of Excel Entertainment filed a formal complaint with the Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) on April 11, alleging that Singh’s withdrawal at such an advanced stage exposed them to severe financial losses. FWICE subsequently convened meetings with all parties involved before announcing its decision at a press conference on May 25.
An internal audit conducted by Excel Entertainment reportedly put pre-production losses at approximately ₹45 crore, covering four overseas recce trips, script development costs — including changes requested by Singh — adjustments to cast and crew, and contractual commitments to more than 200 workers whose schedules had already been locked in ahead of the shoot.
The Ban
FWICE Chief Advisor Ashoke Pandit clarified that the directive is not a legally enforceable ban, since FWICE is a trade body rather than a judicial authority. However, it instructs the federation’s members — spanning 30 affiliated crafts, including technicians and spot boys — not to work on any production involving Singh until the dispute is resolved. FWICE further stated that Singh’s ban was compounded by his refusal to appear before the federation to present his side of the story, despite being given three reminders.
In its official statement, FWICE noted that abrupt withdrawals from committed, large-scale productions violate industry norms and professional ethics, and that “no superstar is bigger than the law” of the industry’s working relationships.
The Response
Ranveer Singh has largely maintained public silence on the matter, choosing not to engage directly with the controversy while publicly wishing the Don franchise success going forward. Separately, actor Aamir Khan denied rumours suggesting he had any involvement in the Ranveer-Farhan dispute, calling such claims baseless.
What’s Next
As of now, both sides remain firm in their positions, with Excel Entertainment maintaining its ₹45 crore damages claim and FWICE’s directive still in effect. The industry continues to watch closely for any signs of resolution, as the standoff raises broader questions about contractual obligations, actor accountability, and production risk management in Bollywood’s biggest-budget projects.
