The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has initiated trials of polymer currency notes as part of efforts to improve the durability, cleanliness, and security of Indian banknotes. Polymer notes are known for their longer lifespan, greater resistance to moisture and wear, and advanced security features that help reduce counterfeiting.
The pilot project will evaluate the performance of polymer notes under Indian climatic conditions and assess their suitability for wider circulation. RBI officials will study factors such as printing quality, durability, handling efficiency, and public acceptance before making further decisions.
Several countries have successfully adopted polymer banknotes because they typically last longer than paper currency and require less frequent replacement, helping reduce long-term production costs. Enhanced security features also make them more difficult to counterfeit.
The trial represents another step in India’s efforts to modernize its currency management system while improving convenience and efficiency for both consumers and financial institutions.
