The Delhi High Court has emphasized the need for a legal framework that balances press freedom with professional accountability. While granting bail in an assault case involving two freelance journalists, the court observed that freedom of the press should not become a shield for irresponsible journalism or content that threatens public order. Justice Girish Kathpalia noted that anyone with a mobile phone can now claim to be a reporter, often without proper training or ethical responsibility. The court urged lawmakers to introduce regulations that safeguard journalistic independence while ensuring ethical standards, accountability, and respect for citizens’ rights and public interest.
